CTC Heart of England Meriden Cycling Rally

The Heart of England Cycling Rally has been held for many years at the village of Meriden (between Coventry and Birmingham) - the proclaimed Centre of England, where in 1921 a National War Memorial dedicated to cyclists was erected on the village green.

2014 sees the centenary of the outbreak of WW1, to be marked by a special programme of events.

0700    Meriden Methodist Church Hall open for Audax registration
Light refreshments available throughout the day. Cycling Memorabilia will be on display.

0800    Cotswold Challenge 160k Audax - online entries close 1700 14 May 2014

-  the ride consists of mostly country lanes and takes riders across the Avon, then leafy scenery through Cotswold villages.  It then climbs Edge Hill to the Civil War site and through Burton Dassett Country Park before returning round Leamington.

0900   Warwickshire Wanderer 105k Audax - online entries close 1700 14 May 2014

- The ride consists of mostly country lanes and takes riders across the Avon, then leafy scenery past the Edgehill Civil War site. The route then climbs through Burton Dassett Country Park before returning round Leamington Spa.

Refreshments will be available at the start and finish and at venues on the rides  Entry £8 or £10 on the day. (Additional £2 insurance fee for non-CTC/Audax UK/British Cycling members)

0930    Registration for Leisure rides.
£2.50 in advance, £3.00 on the day.  Leave Methodist Church Hall 1000

1  A relaxing ride of about 20 miles visiting the Cyclists' Memorial and on lanes to a garden centre for a late coffee stop, returning to Meriden by 1330

2 A gently paced ride of about 30 miles visiting the Cyclists' Memorial and following quiet lanes in North Warwickshire with stops for coffee and lunch (bring your own or buy), returning to Meriden by 1600

1900    Meriden Village Hall opens for the Centennial Film Show

2014 is the Centennial of the outbreak of WW1. CTC-Heart Of England is hosting a special film night as part of the Meriden Cycling Rally and Centennial Memorial weekend.

A Day Out by Alan Bennett.  Made for the BBC in 1972 this film is set in 1911 and is about a group of emotionally repressed men who turn a Sunday Cycle Ride into a formal occasion.  
The main film will be followed by a showing of the short British Transport film made in 1955  CTC Cyclists' Special - a train is hired in London to take riders to Rugby

There will also be a host of cycling memorabilia on display in the Village Hall for guests to browse around and reminisce.

1100    On Meriden Green – Centennial Memorial Service and dedication of the new plaque by the Bishop of Warwick. Music by the Bulkington Silver Band.

1200-1300 Village Hall Open - Cakes and tea/coffee available, or bring your own sandwiches. Cycling Memorabilia on display.
